Most people make a big deal about using Spell Check and Grammar Check in Microsoft Word, when it is actually a very easy process.
Notice at the bottom of the Status Bar is a book with a check mark.

This button lets you use the Spell/Grammar Check Commands. The menu can be accessed by right-clicking on the book. When you do this the following menu will pop up.

When you misspell a word, you will see a red line under the word.
To fix the misspelling, right-click on the word. Look at the options you are given and click word with the correct spelling. The word in your document will automatically be changed.

When you make a grammatical error, you will see a green line under the sentence.

To fix the grammatical error, right-click on the word or sentence. Look at the options you are given and click the menu entry with the correct grammar. The sentence in your document will automatically be changed.

Notice at the bottom of this menu is an entry called "Options."

The Spelling and Grammar Dialog Box box will give you options about how you want Word to handle mistakes as you type. The two commands pointed to in red are particularly helpful, because when these are checked, Word will automatically correct spelling and grammar as you type.

If you wish to turn off Spelling and Grammar Options, right-click on the book. When you see the pop up menu, click the options you would like to turn off. When you see a check mark next to an option, that means it is turned off.

Sometimes as you type a document, you would like to spice up your writing. The easiest way to do this is to use the Thesaurus tool. It is very easy to use. When you find a word that you would like to "spice up", simply right-click on the word. Choose Synonyms from the drop-down menu.

Choose the word you prefer, click on it, and the new word will replace the old one in your document.
