Using Microsoft Word

1: The Word Screen

Below are the major parts of the Word screen.

Word Screen

The Menu Bar

All Word commands can be accessed from here. Word has many toolbars with icons to make tasks easier. Tasks or commands are grouped by what they do.

Seeing the All Menus

To view all options in each menu, you must click the double arrows at the bottom of the menu.

You can also hold the mouse at the bottom of the menu for a few seconds and the rest of the menu options will come down.

Helpful Hint: Word will change the order of commands on a menu, and put the commands you use most on top. Notice some menu items are "grayed out." When you see this it means those commands cannot be used at the present time.

Another Helpful Hint: Whenever you want to do something in Word, try "Right-clicking." When you do this, a list of menu options with all the commands you can do at that moment will appear. I always tell my students, "When in doubt, right-click."

Right-clicking is always an option, although for the sake of simplicity, it will not be mentioned in this tutorial again.
