Using Microsoft Word

7: Working With Graphics

Please note: I could (and do) go on and on about working with clip art and graphics. For the purposes of a beginner's tutorial, I will only discuss the basics here. Check the Word Tutorials Index for advanced Tutorials on working with clip art and graphics.

Adding Clip Art

For older versions of Word, please click here.

MS Word includes a library of small cartoon-like pictures that you can use in your document. These pictures collectively are called "clip art."

To insert clip art into your document, select Insert> Picture> Clip Art from the Menu bar. You will see this dialog window at the right of the page:

Clip Art Dialog Window

In the Search For space, type in the kind of picture you want to add. In this case, I want to search for pictures of the State of Liberty. Click Search when you are finished.

You also have the option of telling Word where you want to look for pictures (Search In:) and what type of picture you are looking for (Results Should Be:).

After you click Search, you will be shown all the pictures your computer has to offer.

Moving Images

Take a look at the 2 illustrations below. As you can see, the bounding boxes (the lines around each picture) are very different. This is very important, because these two pictures will act very differently inside your document.

Notice the bounding box on the first picture is made of white circles. On the seccond picture it is a black line.

If you click your picture and see the bounding box with the circles, you need do nothing. Your picture is ready to be worked with.If you click your picture and see the bounding box with lines, do the following:
